There is so much to see in Northumberland and further afield. Hexham is an ideal base to explore so here are some suggestions of places to visit.
Stretching from the Solway Coast in the West to Wallsend in the East, Hadrian’s Wall is a magnificent structure and a “must visit” destination. Hexham is only 15 minutes away by car from arguably the most spectacular section of The Wall. It is also accessible via public transport with the AD122 bus from Hexham providing a regular service. Many people choose to walk the whole length of The Wall using the Hadrian’s Wall Path, all 84 miles of it. If this is your thing then The Side is ideally placed for rest days.
Closer to home is Hexham Abbey, one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England. As well as holding regular services the Abbey also has a brilliant visitors centre, gift shop and café. It is well worth a visit.
2 minutes away from The Abbey is Hexham Old Gaol, the oldest gaol in England.
Further afield is the wonderful Northumberland Coast, easily reachable by car with stunning views, great walking, historic buildings and picturesque towns and villages. A little further away is The Scottish Borders to the north, The Cumbrian Lake District to the west and Weardale and Teesdale to the south. If the city is your thing then Newcastle upon Tyne is a mere 25 minutes away in the car or you can catch a train or bus from Hexham.
